At Coastside Leadership Academy we redefine education through the innovative concept of microschooling. Students experience the power of microschooling while attending CLA, Skyline College, and engaging in their own extracurriculars. As microschool students, they have flexibility in their curriculum, expertise, and hobbies. Learning expands from a classroom model to engaging in the local and global community as leaders. Our microschool model fosters an environment where shared values and philosophies of learning flourish, embracing innovation and experiential education tailored to meet each student's unique journey. Unlike conventional schooling, CLA operates independently, free from bureaucratic constraints, standardized tests, and rigid curriculums. Students at CLA register as homeschoolers with the California Department of Education, empowering them with flexibility and autonomy in their educational pursuits. This approach enables CLA to deliver cutting-edge education that dynamically adapts to the ever-evolving landscape of learning, preparing students for success in an increasingly complex world.
Coastside Leadership Academy combines multiple research-based best practices in education to create the ultimate learning environment for girls. CLA is led by experts in all girls education who understand that when a girl’s spirit is nurtured and they feel connected to a community, they are able to learn, grow, and lead. CLA puts mindfulness at the forefront of the Academy experience.
Research shows that girls learn best when they feel supported by a community. CLA provides a small class environment for girls in grades 9-12 all learning together.
CLA tunes into the cycles of the earth and human bodies. CLA's daily schedule, four day school week, and yearly cycle prioritize rest and sleep to help student brain development.
Mindfulness and movement in nature are central to developing self awareness. Many of CLA's classrooms are outdoors and focus on Social Emotional Learning.
Student-led days are a beloved Coastside Leadership Academy tradition. At CLA we have an established daily routine that acts as scaffolding for students to lead the day and manage our group when we are out and about doing world learning.
On selected days, our students are empowered to plan our entire day of programming from check in and closing circle, mindfulness and movement activities, the lessons we engage in, and how much time each activity is allotted.
Student leaders learn the value of preparation, time management, and how to navigate around new locations in a group. Some favorite student-led day locations have been Purisima Creek, thrift shopping in Burlingame, Martin’s Beach, and an escape room in San Francisco.
